Since 1991, the MEDIA programme has supported, financed and shaped the European film and audiovisual sector. During this time, €2.6 billion has been invested in the sector. These grants have significantly strengthened the European film industry, made it more competitive outside, enriched Europe's cultural diversity and highlighted the best films and filmmakers.
Estonia joined the programme in 2002, shortly before the EU joined.
Throughout 2021, the European Commission will celebrate the anniversary of the MEDIA programme, which will at the same time usher in a new Creative Europe programme for the period 2021-2027.
