While the number of cinema visitors and ticket revenue decreased in the USA, Europe and elsewhere in the Baltics last year, Estonian people still go to the cinema more every year, but they also demand an increasingly convenient service and cinema experience for it, writes Kristjan Kongo, CEO of Forum Cinemas Baltics.
Speaking about the cinema trends of the new year and summing up the past year, Kongo noted that despite the unusually intense competition, the cinema market in Estonia is in a very good position compared to the rest of the world. "In the U.S., which is still the largest cinema market, both the number of visitors and ticket revenue declined last year. In Europe in general, too, viewership numbers were in a slight decline. The same was true in Lithuania and Latvia, there was no change in either direction. In Estonia, however, the number of visitors increased by 2% and ticket revenue by 6%," he explained.
According to him, the number of cinema visits in Estonia in 2019 was 3,671,349 and the total ticket revenue was 21,761,918 euros. "Last year was, of course, also a very strong year in terms of Estonia's own production, which accounted for as much as 19%," Kongo noted. The film that garnered the most cinema-goers in Estonia in 2019 was "Truth and Justice" (267,588 viewers), followed by "Class Reunion 3" (122,146).
Kongo predicted that since the cinema market in Estonia is already hot, instead of building new cinemas, the focus will be on developing already existing halls and increasing comfort.
