In 2024, Tartu, together with Southern Estonia, will be the European Capital of Culture. This year, as well as in the time immediately preceding and following it, various events will take place here, which will make the cultural picture of Estonia and Europe even more unique and exciting. The Capital of Culture brings together all the fields and mediums of art and gives voice to both local creators and European authors. It empowers the cultural organizer here and encourages international cooperation. As the experience of several other European Capitals of Culture has shown: the initiatives launched during the calendar year often last, the works created tell the story of the Capital of Culture in the following locations, and the participants become ambassadors of culture from around the world. The Capital of Culture is an absolutely extraordinary undertaking in terms of ambition and scale.

The European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 will bring together its activities under the creative concept of the Arts of Survival, which could be thought of as the knowledge and skills that we already have and that we need to learn more in order to be able to live in Tartu, Europe and planet Earth in the future.

There are exactly two years left until the start of the title year. As a curator of contemporary art, I know that this is the right time to initiate new projects: long enough to go from an ambitious idea to a thoughtful execution, and comprehensible enough to keep the project up to date and dialogue-capable.

We hope to see unique and influential projects in the Tartu 2024 program, which is why I invite you to think along with us: on January 19th in Tallinn, at the information day starting at 15:00 in the club Uus Laine (Vana-Kalamaja 1), we will introduce the activities of Tartu 2024 in more detail and talk about the possibilities and conditions of the call for applications for international projects. During this call for proposals, we will distribute 1,000,000 euros between different organizers.

Entry upon presentation of a vaccination passport or a valid certificate of recovery from COVID-19.

Please register your participation no later than 12.01.2022.
